Because of the way the holidays fell on the calendar this year, students are enjoying an extra-long break. For many, the Christmas "buzz" has given way to the Christmas "blahs."

If you listen closely, you can almost hear the whining.

"I'm bored."

"There is nothing to do."

"There is nothing on TV."

"What do we have to eat?"

What can parents do to help stave off kids' boredom (and simultaneously save their sanity)? We asked a panel of Milwaukee moms and dads for ideas. Use the Talkback feature to add your own ideas.

  • Make a trip to the Milwaukee County Zoo (dress warm!).
  • Take the rugrats bowling (and listen to Camper van Beethoven on the ride to the local lanes).
  • Check out the exhibits at the Milwaukee Public Museum, Betty Brinn Children's Museum or Discovery World.
  • Take in a movie.
  • Go ice skating at Red Arrow Park, the Pettit Center (or Eble Park or other facility).
  • Visit the Mitchell Park Domes.
  • Check out the Harley-Davidson Museum.
  • Take Rover to the local dog park. At least he'll get his exercise.
  • Check out one of the "fun" chains, like Pump it Up!, Monkey Joe's or StoneFire Pizza.
  • Go shopping at American Science and Surplus and bring home a project.
  • Hit the library to check out some books and DVDs.
  • Write thank-you notes to relatives for all the great Christmas presents.
  • Hit a thrift shop in search of some cool clothes, toys or furniture and have the kids put on a play.
  • Take a tour of Miller Park and have lunch at Friday's.

Got some ideas of your own? Use the Talkback feature to help some frustrated parents out of a jam.
